The mighty Ponderosa Pine is one of the only Colorado native trees to thrive along the Eastern Plains, throughout the Intermountain West, high up upon some of our tallest peaks, and even into the deserts of Utah! Incredibly drought tolerant once established, Ponderosa Pine are always found on dry, sunny South or West facing slopes along with Juniper and Gambel Oak. Impressive stands can be found in the Black Forest stretching from Franktown to Colorado Springs. It is important to note that Ponderosa Pine shed their lower limbs as they mature, so probably not the best choice for screening. This is a fire defense. Thick, corky bark protects the trunks from intense heat. Ponderosa actually coevolved with fire. In fact, the seeds need fire in order to germinate!
