Hackberry are native to the mid-west and they perform well under a variety of harsh conditions. It will thrive on the dry open prairie as well as low lying wetland sites. Prairie Sentinel is an ultra-slender cultivar that can squeeze in between houses or provide a focal point at the corner of the house. The small fleshy berries persist on the tree and become hard seeds that feed birds and squirrels throughout the winter. We would probably sell more if they had a more pleasant name. The deeply furrowed bark has a unique grey cast and provides four season interest.
